Under the control of dentists, the process of bringing the tooth color back to its old tone or even a few tones whiter with chemically applied methods is called tooth bleaching.
Who can teeth whitening be done?
Whitening treatments can be applied to anyone who has completed tooth development and does not have an allergy to the products used.
How is teeth whitening done?
A detailed intraoral examination is performed before teeth whitening. The degree and type of coloration is determined. If hygienic problems such as dental calculus are encountered during this examination that will impair the effectiveness of the application, these problems are resolved first.
Teeth whitening (bleaching) applications are divided into two as home type and office type whitening. Which of these methods will be applied is decided by considering the wishes of the patient.
How is office whitening done?
In office type whitening, the application is carried out by the dentist. Before the application, a protective layer is applied to the patient’s gums so that the products to be used do not come into contact. Afterwards, the tooth surfaces are dried and whitening products are applied to these surfaces.
In this application, products containing whitening agent called “hydrogen peroxide” are used. These products can sometimes be in forms that can be applied alone, or sometimes in forms that can be increased with a number of light sources.
Office type teeth whitening (bleaching) applications require one or two sessions of treatment. Each session takes approximately one hour.
How is home bleaching done?
In the home bleaching method, plates specially produced for the patient’s mouth are used for each patient. These plaques are produced on the models obtained by taking measurements from the mouth of the patient after the problems such as tartar, caries and similar problems are eliminated. Then, gels with chemical content called “carbamyl peroxide” are given to the plates prepared by the physician by explaining the application method to the patient. In home bleaching methods, an average of 5-7 days of application is usually sufficient. This application should be done between 4-8 hours a day. One of the most important points in this method is to make the application method and dose as described by the physician. Otherwise, conditions such as excessive sensitivity in the teeth may occur.
How to whiten root canal treated teeth?
Root canal treated (devital) teeth take on a darker and duller color over time. The whitening treatments to be applied to these teeth are different. The canal filling of the tooth is lowered a little with special burs, and a special whitening product is placed inside the tooth and closed with a temporary filling so that there is no leakage into the mouth. This product stays in the tooth for a maximum of 1-2 days. Then, when the root canal treated tooth reaches sufficient whiteness, the whitening product is removed from the tooth by the dentist and the treatment is completed with the tooth filling. One of the most important points in this treatment method is to take care that the whitening product does not stay in the tooth for more than the specified time. Otherwise, the tooth may be damaged.
In which cases bleaching applications are not performed?
In cases where the tooth enamel has structural defects due to genetic reasons, whitening treatments may not give the desired result. In such cases, treatments such as bonding applications or lamina coatings are preferred.
Whitening treatments cannot be preferred in cases where there are large fillings or excessive material losses in the anterior teeth.
Whitening products are only effective on dental tissues and cannot whiten coatings or fillings. For this reason, it is preferred to use porcelain applications in such cases.
In cases called dentin sensitivity, bleaching treatments are not recommended as they will increase these sensitivities.
It is necessary to wait for the completion of tooth development in order to carry out whitening applications in young patients with ongoing tooth development.
Advantages of Whitening
It is everyone’s desire to have a white and beautiful smile. However, discoloration caused by structural or external factors is a major obstacle to having the desired smile.
Although there are no shape and alignment disorders that will adversely affect the aesthetic appearance of the teeth, the disturbing colorations that exist can cause people to be dissatisfied with their smiles and thus cause both social and psychological problems.
Tooth discoloration is sometimes related to deposits on tooth surfaces and can be easily removed by tooth cleaning and polishing. This type of coloration is called “external coloration”. However, in some cases, there are situations called “internal discoloration” where the coloration of the teeth occurs in the deeper dental tissues. These discolorations are applied to teeth cleaning and polishing.
They cannot be removed with blades.
The solution of internal discoloration problems is extremely easy with teeth whitening treatments called “bleaching”.

What should be considered during teeth whitening (bleaching) treatments?
Good oral hygiene should be provided before teeth whitening applications. If there are problems such as gingival diseases, dental calculus, caries, these problems should be resolved before whitening applications.
Every person’s tooth color and structure is different from each other. For this reason, it should be taken into consideration that whitening applications will create different levels of results for each person.
It is normal to experience temporary sensitivity in the teeth after the application, and these sensitivities usually end within a few days. In order to minimize these sensitivities, desensitizing products containing fluorine and potassium nitrate can be applied after bleaching applications. Sometimes tenderness and pain can be longer and more severe. In such cases, it may be necessary to interrupt the application of bleaching methods. Whitening products applied in higher doses and times than recommended increase these sensitivities and may damage the teeth. Therefore, it is extremely important that the application times, the products and doses used are under the control of the dentist.
During and after teeth whitening applications, the permeability of the tooth enamel increases and the teeth become more open to discoloration for a while. For this reason, it is necessary to avoid the consumption of products that can increase tooth discoloration, such as tea, coffee, cigarettes, food and beverages containing coloring food dyes, during and 2-3 weeks after whitening treatments.

Why are teeth discolored?
Long years of consumption of coloring foods and products such as tea, coffee, cigarettes and these can cause intense discoloration on the teeth.
Teeth may be darker than normal due to genetics or exposure to factors in the womb.
The use of some drugs and chemicals can give a darker color to the teeth.
Not giving the necessary importance to oral hygiene can cause discoloration of the teeth as well as the loss of tooth and gingival health.
Some teeth that have undergone root canal treatment may lose their natural color over time and take on a darker color.
Will teeth that have been bleached become colored again?
The recoloring of the teeth and the reoccurrence of the need for whitening vary according to the habits of the person and the products they consume. In cases where good oral hygiene is available and attention is paid to the products consumed, the teeth can maintain their whiteness for a long time. However, in cases where products such as tea, coffee, cigarettes, etc. that can cause intense discoloration are used continuously and the necessary care is not given to oral hygiene, the teeth can be colored again in a short time.
